Heroic Simplicity
Before this, a simple landscape had no right to become a painting. A village had no value unless it came with romanticised ruins, dramatic skies, historical weight. The art world wanted grandiose. Always grandiose. Pissarro had zero interest in that. He stepped outside his door in Pontoise, looked at the hill, and painted exactly what was there. Two people. Fields. Rooftops. Ordinary afternoon.
