There are three powerful women in this painting. Three women fighters in a men's world. Attending the peonies is Katharine Ludington. She didn't only grow this garden, she held suffragist political meetings in it. Painting the peonies is Matilda Browne, the one artist treated as an equal by the male artists of the Lyme Art Colony. Too good to ignore. And admiring the peonies is Florence Griswold, the one who kept the lights on and made it all possible.
