Monet's Dutch Detour
May 1871. The Franco-Prussian war is over, but Monet won't go back to France. The Paris Commune has turned the city into a war zone again. Violence everywhere. Not the place to bring your family. So he takes a detour to Zaandam, Holland. His friend Daubigny had recommended it. And Monet finds exactly what he needs: "Enough to paint for a lifetime", he said.
