In 1898, ten American painters did what Monet and his friends had done. Walked out of the big academies and started their own shows. Same rebellion, totally different vibe. Monet's group was broke and chaotic, open to anyone. The Americans were already rich and respected, and kept their club at exactly ten members. Frank Weston Benson was one.
