He Won the Lottery and Became an Impressionist
Armand Guillaumin was right there from the start. Friends with Cézanne. Friends with Pissarro. Exhibited at the first Impressionist show in 1874. But he had a problem the others didn't. He was broke in a way that meant he had to work a full time job at the railway department. Painted at night. Painted on weekends. While Monet and Renoir were building careers, Guillaumin was squeezing art into the margins of his life. Then in 1891 he won the lottery. Literally. 100,000 francs.
