This is the place Van Gogh rented with his own money for the first time in his life. He was 35. Four rooms in the right wing of this yellow building on a corner in Arles. Before that he had always depended on family or squeezed into someone else's home. The house was actually yellow. That was its real color, like many buildings in the south of France. But you know Van Gogh. He didn't just paint the yellow he saw. He turned it up. Made it glow against that blue sky like the whole building was radiating heat. He wanted this place to become a studio where artists could live and work together.
