Monet: 25-Year-Old Prologue

You are looking at a young man's painting. You are also already looking at a genius' painting. Monet painted this off the coast of his beloved Normandy at about 25 years old, in the middle of a storm, maybe because of it. Everything is already here: painting outside, reality dressed with his own perception, and light. A large strip of light cuts across the canvas like a glowing ribbon. Made a few years later, Monet would probably have shown this one at the first impressionist exhibition.
