Monet never painted his father's face
Summer 1867. Monet had no money, a pregnant girlfriend his family refused to accept, and zero recognition. So he went back to his aunt's house in Sainte Adresse, Normandy. That's his father sitting in the chair. The man who wanted him to quit painting and get a real job. Monet put him right there in the foreground, back turned to the viewer, while the whole world is happening in front of him. Ships, flags, light, life. That was a deliberate choice. A 27 year old with nothing to his name telling his father you are looking the wrong way. They never truly got along. He never painted his face.
