Mary Cassat Takes Control of the Gaze

She reversed the rules. In 19th century Paris, the opera house wasn't really about opera. It was where you went to see and be seen, and women in the boxes knew it. Renoir and other male painters leaned into that, painting women as dressed up spectacles, posed for whoever was looking. Cassatt broke that setup completely.
