Van Gogh grew up in flat Dutch fields. Gray skies. Still water. Then in 1888 he took a trip to Saintes Maries de la Mer and saw the Mediterranean for the first time. He painted this in a few hours. You can feel it. He wrote to his brother Theo that the sea changed color constantly. That you couldn't pin it down. And for someone who needed to paint everything he felt, that must have been maddening and thrilling at the same time. He signed it "Vincent" in red. Bottom left.
