Pennsylvania winters, frozen rivers, gray light fighting the cold. Known as the best snow painter in America. Then in the 1920s he visited his son in Los Angeles. Tujunga Canyon. No snow. Just heat, purple shadows, yellow scrub, bone-dry rock. He hit the canyon with the same loaded brush he used on blizzards.
