Homer: too early to be impressionist

Homer never shows up in the impressionist chapter of art history books. He gets filed under American realist. In 1873, when he painted this, impressionism had not even been given its name yet. But everything here would have made it eligible for the first impressionist exhibition. Painted outdoors, an everyday moment, and a whole picture built on light and texture.
