Mary Cassatt left Pennsylvania for Paris and never went back. Never married. Never had kids. And yet nobody painted childhood like her. The men painted battles, landscapes. She painted this. A nurse, a baby in a pram, a little one sitting in the dirt. The kind of moment nobody thought was worth a canvas. Degas invited her to exhibit with the Impressionists. While they painted cafes, she painted the small hours.
