Caillebotte Painted Paris Like a Camera
This is what Paris looked like on a winter day from Caillebotte's balcony, six floors up on Boulevard Haussmann. Snow on the roofs, chimneys smoking, Montmartre hill hazy in the background. He built the painting like a camera would. Mostly sepia, almost monochrome, barely any depth. A few years later, his brother Martial, an early adopter of photography, used that same window and that same view to take actual pictures.
