In less than 12 days, in January 1882, the French stock market crashed. The same scenario would repeat half a century later in New York. Panic hit. Many people went bankrupt, including Camille Pissarro's art dealer. The most anti-capitalist of all the Impressionists, wrecked by a stock market crisis. How ironic. To survive, Pissarro left Paris and spent time in Rouen, where he painted the port and this landscape.
