Monet Didn't Want to Paint Venice

Venice, 1908. Monet is 68 and he doesn't really want to be here. Too much beauty already done by too many painters. Then he starts looking at the water instead of the stone. The palace goes soft. The canal does the real work. Pink, green, violet, all of it moving. He never finished these in Venice. He brought them home to Giverny and worked on them for years, from memory, while Alice was fighting her last illness.
