Monet's 1880 Plan

Monet was desperate. Last year's Impressionist show had flopped, financially. He couldn't afford a repeat. And he was done arguing with Degas over who got to show. So he made a plan. April: boycott the Impressionist exhibition. May: submit to the official Salon, take the visibility, take the critics too. June: first major solo show. It worked. By the time he painted this in summer, everything had changed.
