Most Impressionists ran from anything industrial. Pissarro ran toward it. He was a Proudhonist, he believed labor and industry were forces of progress, not things to hide from. So when he painted the French countryside, he didn't erase the factory creeping into the hills. He let the smokestack sit right there in the landscape, smoke and all. And somehow it doesn't ruin the view. It just becomes part of it.
